![]() Glossary of Packaging TermsCarton Clamps- method of palletless handling is clamping unitized loads directly. Carton clamps are most often used with with products that have sufficient strength or packaging that can withstand the clamping force of the carton clamp. COF- Coefficient of friction- The coefficient of friction is a dimensionless quantity used to calculate the force of friction (static or kinetic). The coefficient of static friction is defined as the ratio of the maximum static friction force (F) between the surfaces in contact to the normal (N) force. The coefficient of kinetic friction is defined as the ratio of the kinetic friction force (F) between the surfaces in contact to the normal force: Ff/N. Forklift - A small industrial vehicle with a power-operated pronged platform that can be raised and lowered for insertion under a load to be lifted and moved. -AKA Fork Truck. Kraft Linerboard- A strong paper or cardboard made from sulfate-process wood pulp; unbleached varieties are used for wrapping paper and shipping cartons. Pallet- A portable platform used for storing or moving cargo or freight. Pallet-less handling- Moving unitized loads with out the use of a pallet. Pallet-less handling alternatives includes Carton clamps and slipsheets. Push/Pull Attachment- Fork lift attachment used to move loads on a slipsheet. Skidboards- Slipsheets are commonly called Skidboards or slip pallets in the European market. Slipsheets-Slipsheets are flat Polyethylene Sheets that can be placed under a load replacing a traditional pallet. Sipsheets allow a load it to be mobilized just like a pallet. The top surface of a slipsheet typically features a greater coefficient of friction (COF) which allows for the load to remain motionless during transport. The bottom surface of the slipsheet (slip area) has far less COF, which allows for the load to move easily onto the slipsheet. Tier Sheets- Often refereed to as divider sheets are used as layer sheets between products stacked on a pallet or slipsheet. Tier sheets help to stabilize the unit load and minimize product contamination. ITW Plastic Tier Sheets are manufactured to comply with the demands of the food and beverage Learn more about our Tier Sheets
